MediaLaws is pleased to share a two-day workshop “DATA MARKETS IN EUROPE: NEW TRAJECTORIES IN LAW, TECHNOLOGY, AND GOVERNANCE”, taking place on 8-9 December 2025 at the Park Inn, in Leuven (Belgium). The event is part of the UPCAST project and is organised by the Centre for IT & IP Law (CiTiP) at the Faculty of Law of the University of Leuven (KU Leuven).
The workshop will examine the EU’s legislative package aimed at building a single market for data — in particular the Data Act, the Data Governance Act and the regulation establishing the European Health Data Space — as well as other data-relevant legislation including the GDPR and the AI Act. It will explore the emergence of new business ecosystems organised around the concept of ‘data spaces’, as well as the persistent obstacles that still hinder large-scale data sharing. In this context, technologies such as AI, smart contracts and automated compliance mechanisms are being considered as promising tools to scale up data transactions in a trustworthy and efficient manner. A central issue remains ensuring data availability: beyond cases of mandatory sharing, this requires the development of clear and effective incentives for companies to engage in data-sharing initiatives.
The event will bring together scholars, regulators, technical experts and market actors to reflect on the future of European data-sharing infrastructures and the new trajectories shaping EU data governance.
