MediaLaws is pleased to share the Call for Papers for the 19th international Conference “Competing Visions, Shared Futures”, organised by the Computers, Privacy and Data Protection (CPDP) – a non-profit academic platform founded by research groups from the Vrije Universitet Brussel, the Université de Namur and Tilburg University. The Conference will take place in Brussels (Belgium) from 19 to 22 May 2026.

The Call is open to academics and researchers and is structured around two tracks, one addressed to postdoctoral researchers and faculty members and the other dedicated to PhD candidates and early-career researchers. A limited number of travel grants may be available to support PhD candidates facing financial constraints.

The CPDP 2026 Scientific Committee welcomes multidisciplinary submissions from law, social sciences, philosophy, computer science, and related fields. Suggested topics include reflections on ten years of the GDPR, focusing on its achievements and limitations, the protection of children’s rights in the digital environment, and analyses of how extra-European approaches—such as those developed in California, Brazil, China, and the Global South—may challenge or complement European regulatory frameworks. Further areas of interest encompass the geopolitics of digital governance and digital sovereignty, the implications of personal data protection and digital rights in financial services, the role of digital technologies, data, and artificial intelligence in armed conflict, and the impact of data infrastructures on political processes and democratic resilience, as well as competition and accountability within Europe’s digital rulebook, the role of Data Protection Officers as strategic actors, the balance between privacy and security in times of crisis, critical approaches to artificial intelligence, and the risks associated with pervasive surveillance by design in everyday digital life.

Submissions must be made through the online submission form and must include a full paper of 6,000–12,000 words, including notes and bibliography, an abstract of 200–300 words without footnotes or references, up to five keywords and an indication of the relevant research discipline. All submissions will be subject to a double-blind peer review process conducted by members of the CPDP 2026 Scientific Committee.

The deadline for paper submissions is 31 January 2026.
